An Intermittent Decant Extended Aeration (IDEA) plant is a type of wastewater treatment system (activated sludge) that treats sewage or industrial wastewater by utilising extended aeration and intermittent decanting. IDEA plants employ a combination of extended aeration and intermittent decanting to treat wastewater. The extended aeration phase provides sufficient time for microorganisms to degrade organic pollutants in the wastewater. IDEAs are commonly used for decentralised treatment systems to remove organic pollutants and nutrients from wastewater.
