Water Softening (WS) is an ion exchange process which involves passing hard water through a resin bed containing sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium ions in the water are exchanged for sodium ions on the resin beads, softening the water. Periodically, the resin bed is regenerated by flushing it with a brine solution to recharge the sodium ions. This process removes hardness minerals, reduces scale buildup, and improves water quality.
